Last week we went to a restaurant that came recommended by a coworker called Hungry Sumo located in Bay View, Wisconsin. I have talked about Bay View in a past post and know what I think about this location. Bay View is the 'it' spot to be right now. The entire street of Kinnikinnic is lined with coffee shops such as Colectivo and Stone Creek and many restaurants such as Hungry Sumo and Café Lulu and intermixed with private residents and apartments.
Kinnikinnic Avenue is the main thoroughfare that runs down the center of Bay View. If you follow that down further you will run into the Walker's Point neighborhood and the Third Ward and eventually the Lower East Side of Milwaukee.
Now that I have given you a little description of Bay View we can get back to the Hungry Sumo.
The restaurant is located on the corner of Kinnikinnic Avenue and Lenox Street just down the street from HoneyPie.
First, let me give you a little background on the restaurant itself. The restaurant is owned by Pimrapas Lertprasert and Thitichai. The interior of the Hungry Sumo blends contemporary decor with minimalism making it a pleasing look. The menu is quite extensive and would take quite a few trips back to sample all the menu. By the end of our meal there we would be more than willing to go back. The staff was quite attentive from the moment that we arrived all the way to the end of our meal.
For starters, I chose the Tom Yum Chicken soup is a hot and sour soup containing cilantro, white onion, tomato, lime juice, scallion, and mushroom. I found this soup to be the right combination of hot and sour and would recommend it highly. Anyone who knows me can tell you that I think cilantro is the ambrosia of the gods. Kristopher had the Miso soup. Just a tidbit of information for those of you not familiar with Asian food Miso soup is a traditional Japanese soup which consists of stock called "dashi" which is mixed with Miso paste and mixed with other ingredients which can vary depending upon region and season.
Each soup was served in a medium-sized bowl that was placed on a rectangular plate. Along with the soup we received two pieces of creamy crab wonton. I am sure that anyone who has been to a Chinese restaurant is familiar with crab Rangoon. While I love crab Rangoon the creamy crab wonton has them beat hands down.
Now on to the main courses. I chose the chicken with red curry. The red curry has bell pepper, bamboo, basil and pea pod in a red curry sauce. The red curry is also available in gluten-free. On that note, it is nice that the staff asks if you have any food allergies. Kristofer had the Pad Thai. The Pad Thai consists of bean sprouts, scallion, egg, and crushed peanuts with pad Thai sauce served on a bed of stir-fried thin rice noodles.
Each of the main courses was top-notch, and we would recommend this restaurant to anyone. Check out the full menu at Hungry Sumo.
