My Wardrobe: What Every Man Needs

Updated: Jun 18, 2020

I think that no matter where you live that there is a basic wardrobe that you can adapt to where you live. Here in the Midwest, we tend to dress more casually, and we tend to layer our clothes because the weather changes several times a day. Out on the west coast clothing is more casual and laid back while still being trendy and the east coast is more formal.

Here is a list of things that every man should have in his closet. These are the minimum essentials that you should have in your closet.

JEANS

Jeans have been a staple in a man’s wardrobe for as long as I can remember and I see no change in this for a long time. I prefer skinny or slim fit jeans. Jeans can be dressed up with a blazer and a pair of Chelsea boots if you are going someplace that you require more than just jeans and a t-shirt. Here are the five most common styles of men’s jeans:

1. The skinny jean.

It is a tighter fit with a tapered leg. It most commonly comes in a low to mid-rise. I would suggest buying a pair one to two inches larger in the waist size to accommodate your private parts.

2. Slim Fit.

It comes a little looser than the skinny jean. It is generally mid-rise with a narrow leg opening.

3. Regular Fit.

Generally mid-rise with a large leg opening.

4. Relaxed fit.

It is a loose fit jean from the hem to the leg opening.

5. Loose fit. It provides the most room through the hem and leg

Just a caveat. When choosing a pair of jeans always measure your inseam and buy a pair of jeans that fit you. Always try on the jeans before you purchase them. The waist of the jeans should sit on your waist and form a straight line down with a slight fold or break near the area where the jeans meet your shoes.

BLAZERS

There are many types of blazers to choose from depending upon the purpose. The most common is the blue blazer. This color is versatile in that you can wear it for a business meeting with gray dress pants and dress shoes or dress it down with jeans. Here are a few styles that are being worn today.

CHINOS

Chinos are a staple for as long as I can remember. You can wear them for a day out or a more casual look at the office. Chinos were worn by the military and became popular as time went on. Chinos were commonly tan, but today come in many colors such as red, white or blue, and even pink. BUTTON-DOWN SHIRTS

Button-down shirts should be a staple in every man's closet. Button-down shirts come in many styles and materials from casual to formal. Dress shirts are not limited to classic white anymore. They are available in many shades and colors such as pink and blue. They also come in many fits such as classic and narrow.

T-Shirts

I love a good t-shirt for a casual day at home or going out for the day with friends. I will often pair up a t-shirt with a vest or sweater if its cooler outside

BELTS

Belts serve a dual purpose in fashion. They were originally used to hold up your pants, but in my opinion, they also serve as a fashion accessory today. I have several v- neck t-shirts from several brands such as Gucci and H&M.

CASUAL SHOES

It is always good to have a few casual shoes at home to wear. Having at least a couple pairs gives you the chance to switch it up a bit. I always like to have a pair of casual dress shoes such as a pair of Chelsea boots and a pair of tennis shoes for more casual days. DRESS SHOES

One should always have at least one pair of dress shoes in their closet. Whether you need them for that job interview or a date. OUTERWEAR

A jacket or coat is a must in most parts of the United States whether it cold or wet outside. They come in many styles and materials. Your choice of coat or jacket will depend on your style, season, and materials. These are just the essentials that I think you may need. Feel free to add to the list or minus it. It is just a suggested list of items. There are many other things that you can add to your wardrobes such as polo shirts and bow ties. it will all depend on your style. In later blog posts, I will look at each piece of clothing in greater detail about the fit and styles of each item. Ciao!
